I want to be able to control the desktop client from another source

I want to be able to control the desktop client from another online service. For example, I want to be able to have the nightshade turn off my monitor when an online Pomodoro timer expires.

Potentially this would be 2-way communication, with the online timer resuming automatically with some trigger from the nightshade client.
