Update UniFi Network Application to v10.1.85

MongoDB 3.6 → 4.4 Upgrade Procedure (Required for UniFi 10.1.85)

Upgrading MongoDB from 3.6 to 4.4 (required for UniFi Network 10.1.85) will prevent existing UniFi Controller databases from starting due to WiredTiger compatibility changes.

The existing MongoDB data files created under 3.6 cannot be opened by 4.4. The supported and reliable workaround is to restore from a UniFi application backup rather than attempting an in-place database migration.

Below are the steps that worked successfully.

Step 1 — Create a UniFi Application Backup

From your running UniFi Controller:

1. Navigate to Settings → System → Backups
2. Click Download Backup
3. Save the generated .unf file locally

Ensure the backup is:

• Recent
• Not encrypted

Step 2 — Back Up Persistent Storage (Safety Step)

On the host running the UniFi Docker container:

1. SSH into the server
2. Back up the persistent data directory (adjust path as needed):

cp -ap ./docker/unifi ./docker/unifi.backup-$(date +%F)

This preserves the original database files in case recovery is needed.

Step 3 — Remove Existing MongoDB Data

Delete only the MongoDB data directory inside the persistent storage:

rm -rf ./docker/unifi/data

⚠️ Do not skip Step 2 before performing this step.

Step 4 — Upgrade to unifi_docker 10.1.85

Pull and start the updated Docker image as usual.
The container will initialize a fresh MongoDB 4.4 database.

Step 5 — Restore the UniFi Backup

1. Log in to the upgraded UniFi Controller
2. Navigate to Settings → System → Restore
3. Upload the previously downloaded .unf backup file

UniFi will rebuild the database using the restored configuration.

Result

• MongoDB 4.4 starts cleanly
• UniFi 10.1.85 runs successfully
• All site configuration, devices, and settings are preserved via restore

This approach avoids database compatibility issues and provides a clean migration path to MongoDB 4.4.

Upgrading MongoDB from 3.6 to 4.4 (required for UniFi Network 10.1.85)

I have upgraded yesterday to 10.1.89 (rebuilding the image myself since it's not ready in here) but have stuck to mongodb 3.6.

It seems to work just as usual on mongodb 3.6.

While I understand that I definitively have to plan to upgrade since it's no longer maintained by mongo, I am curious to know what made you write that it was actually required.

• did it come from an unifi release changelog ?
• did you encounter any errors in the application log (I did not see any, but I obviously may have missed something).
