Description
Hi,
first of all thanks for the great work on this repository — it’s an impressive effort.
I’d like to describe my use case and ask whether there is any known workaround or alternative approach for my specific setup.
Context
I own an Apple AirPort Time Capsule (4th generation, model A1409) running NetBSD 4.0.
My goal is to repurpose it as a Time Machine backup destination for macOS Tahoe.
To achieve this, I followed the steps described in this repository.
Problem
At step 5, the guide suggests building Samba with a minimal build, and — if needed — enabling vfs_fruit in order to support Time Machine.
However, after researching compatibility constraints:
- On NetBSD 4.0, the most recent Samba version that can be built and run reliably appears to be Samba 3.x
Newer Samba versions (4.x), which include proper vfs_fruit support for modern Time Machine, seem to require newer NetBSD versions and toolchains.
Samba 3.x lacks of vfs_fruit support expected by modern macOS Time Machine
Question
Given these constraints:
- Is there any known workaround to use Samba 3.x as a Time Machine destination on macOS Tahoe?
- Are there alternative configurations, patches, or legacy compatibility modes that could make this setup viable?
- Or is a newer OS / Samba version strictly required, making NetBSD 4.0 a hard blocker for modern Time Machine support?
