Generally, I'm in favor of more freedom rather than less. Arguably, the mean is at least usually irrelevant. But the median can also be irrelevant if the two distributions don't have identically shaped distributions in which case the U test cannot be taken as a test of median differences ( see for example https://stats.oarc.ucla.edu/other/mult-pkg/faq/general/faq-why-is-the-mann-whitney-significant-when-the-medians-are-equal/ ). So, maybe give users the option to plot medians or means? (Perhaps as an aside, what do people think about plotting the result by first ranking all the data together and then computing the mean rank for each of the two conditions?)

Seems sensible, and, in retrospect, I think I now favour your suggestion over my original!
