Well, this is not legal TeX. If you create a LaTeX document with

$$\begin{array}&
\frac{x}{1} &= & \frac{1}{\frac{x}{2}} \\
x^2 &= &2 \\
x &= &\sqrt{2}
\end{array}$$

and compile it using pdflatex, you'll get:

! LaTeX Error: Illegal character in array arg.
