gradient on an inserted image

Hi guys
i have a question.
How can I set a gradient on an inserted image, for example, of a forest. I know there is an option for this but as soon as I try to apply it to an image the option is gone.
Is there a simple xml command for this, which I can insert via "Edit style"?
