Implementation Complete

Problem Identified

The .env file loading in coaiamodule.py:77 was checking if key not in os.environ before setting variables. This meant pre-existing environment variables took precedence over the local .env file - exactly the opposite of what should happen.

Changes Made

1. Fixed .env Priority in coaiamodule.py

• Changed load_env_file() to always override environment variables with values from .env file
• Updated docstring to reflect that local .env now takes precedence
• This ensures the local .env file is the source of truth, not pre-existing environment variables

Testing

• Local .env variables now correctly override any pre-existing environment variables
• COAIAPY_ENV_PATH can point to any .env file location
• Backward compatible: if COAIAPY_ENV_PATH not set, defaults to .env in current directory

Additional Fix: Config Caching Issue

After initial implementation, found that config was being cached globally and not reloading when COAIAPY_ENV_PATH changed.

Root Cause

The config global variable was set once and never reloaded. If coaiamodule was imported anywhere before coaiapy-mcp called read_config() with the custom env_path, the config would be cached and the custom path would be ignored.

Solution Implemented

• Added _loaded_env_path tracking variable to remember which env_path was used
• Modified read_config() to reload config if the env_path changes: if config is None or _loaded_env_path != env_path
• Improved error messages to show the attempted env_path when files are not found

How it Works Now

MCP Server starts
  ↓
Sets COAIAPY_ENV_PATH=/src/tushellplatform/.env in process environment
  ↓
coaiapy-mcp/tools.py imports and calls read_config(env_path=os.getenv('COAIAPY_ENV_PATH'))
  ↓
read_config() checks: _loaded_env_path != env_path → True (config never loaded)
  ↓
Loads /src/tushellplatform/.env and all variables (LANGFUSE_*, REDIS_*, etc.)
  ↓
Redis and Langfuse clients initialize with correct credentials
  ✓ coaia_tash and coaia_fetch now work

Critical Fix: Redis SSL Connection

Found the actual problem: Redis SSL configuration was not being passed to the Redis client

What Was Wrong

The tools.py was parsing the REDIS_URL and extracting host/port/password, but:

1. Not passing ssl=True flag to redis.Redis()
2. Not handling SSL certificate validation
3. The Upstash Redis URL uses rediss:// (with SSL) but we were ignoring the SSL requirement

Example URL from .env:

REDIS_URL="rediss://default:PASSWORD@humble-bobcat-40664.upstash.io:6379"

We were extracting the components but not telling redis.Redis() to use SSL!

Solution - Latest Commit 1b77549

• Primary: Use redis.from_url() to parse REDIS_URL directly - it handles SSL automatically
• Fallback: If URL-based connection fails, use component config with explicit ssl=True and ssl_cert_reqs="none"
• Priority: Environment variables (REDIS_URL, KV_URL) are checked first, then component config

Updated Flow

1. Load REDIS_URL from /src/tushellplatform/.env via COAIAPY_ENV_PATH
2. redis.from_url("rediss://...") automatically:
   - Recognizes rediss:// scheme
   - Enables SSL
   - Extracts host, port, password
   - Configures proper certificate handling
3. Connection established successfully
4. coaia_tash and coaia_fetch now work ✓

This should now work with Upstash Redis and other SSL-protected services.
