Running kubectl exec-as -u root -n default -c istio-proxy -d sleep-db7f48c4-spbgw -- /bin/bash command throws below error

The same issue for me:
kubectl exec-as -u root -n dev -c backend -d backend-77bffd84b-66hzg -- /bin/bash

FWIW, I was able to get past this by editing the file ~/.kube/plugins/jordanwilson230/kubectl-ssh and deleting this line:

kubectl-plugins/kubectl-ssh

Helpful tip!

My path was a little different, but was able to find it using kubectl plugin list, which showed that my plugins were in ~/.krew/bin/* needed to modify the kubectl-exec_as
