Different frame geometries

In beamer it is quite useful being able to switch between different geometries on a frame-by-frame basis. For example section pages might have taller headlines than normal frames.

It might be worth investigating if one can do something similar with xbeamer, maybe via the \newgeometry/\restoregeometry mechanism...

Imho \newgeometry + \restoregeometry are absolutely the way to go here if we continue with the geometry based page layout approach (which seems to be the unanimous consensus).
