Modes

While beamer modes are useful in order to create multiple versions from the same source, e.g. presentation and handout, but they are also very rigid. xbeamer might be the opportunity to make them more flexible, e.g. to allow users to define their own modes.

This would allow to create presentations for different audiences/languages, c.f. beameraudience package.

I think that's quite doable - the only question is whether these are modes or submodes - you presumably want 'audience' splits to be available for the projector, handouts, etc.

Some approach with modes/submodes might make more sense than the strict hierarchy used by beamer. Then there could be modes like

• medium={projector,handout,...}

and users could add

• language={english,french}
• audience={beginners,experts}
