Navigation/Progress bars

A lot of users seem to love these things. In beamer they are hard to customise (at least beyond changing fonts and colours).

Are there better approaches to navigation/progress bars xbeamer could use?

Interesting question, not least because I don;t think you see these in non-beamer presentations (certainly I don't). Assuming we go with templates, we'll have two questions

• What the standard template(s) should do
• Who's taking on writing non-standard ones!

I used to use the navigation symbols, but I could never remember which symbol meant what. I think it would be good to use more standard symbols, if possible. (Presumably something from Unicode, which possibly has such symbols by now?)

@cfr42 With navigation bar, I meant the one from the headline, sidebar etc. Maybe open a new discussion specifically about navigation symbols?

My take on the navigation symbols is 'no, not as standard' - they might look 'cool' but I don't think they are really a good idea. (I'm still not 100% sure we should even be loading hyperref out-of-the-box, but that I can live with.)

* having some kind of hook to (sub-)sections, like the `\AtBeginSection{}` in beamer

I've added a hook to the section code already, using the now-standard kernel method.
