Accessibility Triage / Needs Discussion

• Dan: Search highlights - Colors for search in notebook and jupyterlab are difficult to use and may be inaccessible jupyter/notebook#7644
  • Team agrees current highlighting colors (yellow current, black with white text for others) aren't great, however, not sure if there is another search problem here
  • Dan to ask about the problem to clarify, what browser, OS, and what the real problem is
  • Need to investigate if we can use browser default colors

Other Topics

• Dan: Cell execution number references - Need cell execution_number while calling dumpCell jupyterlab#17661
  • This is for the debugger component, which may not currently provide a cell ID.
  • Drawback to using a hash function is two identical cells could have the same hash
  • Recommendation is to add a cell ID, which would technically change the kernel message protocol and would require a JEP
  • First create an experimental PR
• Mike: per cell button Per-cell run button jupyterlab#16602
  • Adds a run button on top of the cell number if it hasn't been run
  • Concerns with accessibility and touchscreen manipulation for this hover design
  • CoCalc and Collab have a play button, may need to benchmark what is available
  • Add screenshots to Per cell UI for running cells jupyterlab#2109

• [Jason] Dialog:
  • Recently the HTML <dialog> element has gotten pretty good. Firefox just launched with some improvements, for example. JupyterLab still uses a custom dialog element. https://www.scottohara.me/blog/2023/01/26/use-the-dialog-element.html indicates that we should start exploring using the dialog element (as of 2023), and if not, perhaps explore a11y-dialog if we don't want to maintain our own dialog
  • I was going to open a JLab issue, but I don't know how much of a problem the current dialog is, both in capabilities and in code maintenance. So I don't want to attract attention to a dialog rewrite without it being a clear win. Especially since it seems browsers are still enhancing the dialog element.
  • We appear to be using the HTML dialog element. So maybe this isn't so big of a change to use the built-in dialog functionality, for example for dismissing a dialog or having a inert pane of glass behind the dialog. We likely don't use the showModal() call for dialogs.
  • Jason will open an issue with this info. Edit: Jason opened Investigate using dialog showModal() for dialogs in JupyterLab jupyterlab#17759

Accessibility Triage / Needs Discussion

• Dan - Tab order for status bar items in the right group is swapped
  • There is a PR for this at Fix tab order for status bar items jupyterlab#17700. Potentially the rendering issue on the Terminal tab may not be related to this PR.
• Dan - Scroll Up/Down Button
  • Discussed that a good solution for the pain point would be to add scrollbar width setting to allow users to make the width wider
  • Dan opened Add scrollbar width setting jupyterlab#17757 to capture this feature request

Other

• Rosio's question: Looking at Use content-visibility with contain-intrinsic-size for size caching in windowed notebooks jupyterlab#16327, are there trade-offs to using content-visibility: auto rather than content-visibility: hidden?
  • Suggestions in the call by Mike: we are probably interested in content-visibility: auto to delagate rendering to browsers, unless we run into issues which might mean we end up using content-visibility: hidden and manually handle rendering.
