@kevinlin1 I'm not seeing what in the config that would make the "LInks" header appear on the sidebar. If you know off the top of your head how to add headers/categories to the sidebar, I'd love some guidance. Otherwise, I'll plan to look into it over the weekend and figure out where the magic sauce is hiding.

Hi @ykharitonova, great to see you around again and thanks for contributing the patch a while back. I removed the nav_links configuration feature in v0.3.2-0 because Just the Docs added support for Jekyll Collections. My CSE 143 Autumn 2020 course website uses this feature.

It does make adding links to external websites in the navigation sidebar harder to do. I think this is a good thing though since the sidebar is intended for links to internal pages on the website. I recommend putting external links in the Auxiliary links, which will add your external links as buttons to the right of the search bar. External nav links can be a consistency problem—it's unexpected because the other nav links point to internal pages.

If you'd really like the nav_links feature, you can check out how I integrated it in my CSE 332 Winter 2020 course website's _layouts/default.html file. You can then add nav_links to your _config.yml as follows.

I'm continuing to use the template and continuing to love it! I'm starting to look more into customizing the template, greatly inspired by the DS 100 example.

I was mainly looking for a way to add headers between the different internal resources that I want to link to on the sidebar.

If I understand the info from the Jekyll Collections, I need to

• assemble the resources that I want to link to into collections,
• define a collection in the config file,
• and then the header would automatically appear if I add the header to the configured names in collections under the just_the_docs.

I see that this is how you added the "Lessons" header in CSE 143.

The CSE 332 Winter 2020 link is asking me to log in with the CSE/UW NetID, so I'm not able to see how the default.html is using nav_links. Perhaps, that's something that can be added to the README or the default template _layouts? ;-)

Yep, that looks right. For your case of wanting to add headers between internal resources, I'd use Jekyll Collections as you suggested.

For future reference, to get the configuration I used in CSE 332 Winter 2020, you'll want to take the _layouts/default.html from Just the Docs source and modify the side bar to add a secondary navigation. (This snippet might need some updating, but should work with the config nav_links I showed above.)
