Custom Cast Attribute Getting Overridden on Save

Description

Hi there. So I've made a fairly straightforward custom cast implementation to convert between US Dollars on my frontend and that same value in cents at the database level. The code looks like this:

/**
 * @inheritdoc
 */
public function get($model, $key, $value, $attributes)
{
    $formatter = numfmt_create('en_US', NumberFormatter::CURRENCY);
	return $formatter->formatCurrency($value / 100, 'USD');
}

/**
 * @inheritdoc
 */
public function set($model, $key, $value, $attributes)
{
    return intval(floatval($value) * 100);
}

The get piece of this works flawlessly but for some reason whenever I call save on the model, I end up with a value of 0 in the DB when trying to set it to something else. Here's a specific example I tested in tinker:
$offer = Offer::find(2);
$offer->price = "19.95";

At this point, if I check $offer again, it will properly display the price field as 1995 so I can verify that my cast worked. However, as soon as I call save, it persists to the database as 0. I tracked this down as far as I could and the model's attribute seems to get overridden somewhere in Dispatcher before the model's attributes are persisted to the database.

I've been trying to get to the root cause here for a few hours now with no luck so any guidance you might have would be greatly appreciated.
