Is it intended that relations on custom pivot models aren't loaded?

I tried to elevate my custom pivot model by giving it an incrementing ID, so I could have a different model have a relation to it, but no matter what I do, it refuses to load the relationship. Is this intended behavior? Is there a way to do this?
