🔗 URL Detection & Parsing

• Extended ReferenceFetcher._parse_reference_id() to detect:
  • URL:https://example.com/book/chapter1 format
  • Direct https://example.com/article URLs
  • Case-insensitive url: prefix

🌐 Web Scraping & HTML Conversion

• Added _fetch_url() method with proper User-Agent headers
• Extracts title from HTML <title> tag
• Converts HTML to clean text using BeautifulSoup
• Removes script, style, nav, header, footer elements
• Normalizes whitespace for clean, readable content
• Returns ReferenceContent with content_type="html_converted"

💾 Caching & Storage

• URLs cached as markdown files with YAML frontmatter (same format as PMID/DOI)
• Safe filename generation for URLs with special characters
• Disk caching prevents repeated HTTP requests

🧪 Comprehensive Testing

• 12 new test cases covering URL parsing, fetching, error handling
• Tests for missing titles, malformed HTML, HTTP errors, network exceptions
• Caching behavior verification - no extra HTTP requests on reload

🔧 Integration

• Seamlessly integrates with existing validation pipeline

Issue Summary

This issue requests generic URL checking functionality for validating supporting text against web page content. The goal is to validate citations from relatively static web pages (e.g., book chapter pages, documentation, etc.) using simple HTML-to-markdown conversion and title extraction.

Context & Current State

Currently, linkml-reference-validator supports:

• PMID (PubMed IDs) - with abstract/full text from PMC
• DOI - via Crossref API (metadata only, see reference_fetcher.py:177-235)

The architecture is already in place to support additional reference types through the _parse_reference_id() method in reference_fetcher.py:99-123, which parses reference IDs into a prefix and identifier.

Related Work

Issue #10 (recently closed) implemented title validation against DOI metadata. The same pattern can be extended here for URL validation.

Technical Requirements

Based on the issue description and codebase patterns:

1. URL Detection & Parsing

• Extend _parse_reference_id() to detect HTTP/HTTPS URLs
• Support both prefixed (URL:https://...) and raw URL formats

2. HTML Fetching & Conversion

• Fetch web page content via HTTP(S)
• Convert HTML to markdown using html2text (or similar library)
• Extract page <title> from HTML for basic metadata

3. Content Validation

• Apply existing text normalization and substring matching from SupportingTextValidator
• Store converted markdown in cache (following existing pattern: references_cache/URL_*.md)

4. Limitations to Document

Per the issue: "Don't attempt any complex metadata extraction, just title and html2text"

• No author/journal/year extraction
• No PDF processing
• Focus on static web pages only
• Simple title + markdown body

Considerations & Edge Cases

1. URL stability: Web pages change over time (solution: caching helps, but validation may break if page changes)
2. Rate limiting: Respect robots.txt and add delays (reuse existing rate_limit_delay)
3. Redirects: Handle HTTP redirects appropriately
4. Character encoding: Handle various encodings properly
5. Large pages: Consider content size limits
6. Dynamic content: JavaScript-rendered content won't be captured (acceptable limitation per issue scope)

1. Should URL validation support authentication (basic auth, cookies)?
2. Maximum page size limit to fetch?
3. Should we follow redirects automatically?
4. User-agent string to use in requests?
