I have an old nvidia geforce card supported by nvidia 470 driver. But when I launch the driver manager, it tells me that all the drivers are present. Have you used the nvidia ppa to enable nvidia 470 driver ? Because, by default, Linux Mint don't give me this driver.

Have a nvidia 920m card, driver manager states that the 470 driver is recommended, works fine with the 6.8 kernel.

Have tested with kubuntu 24.04 and it has the same issue with the 6.14 kernel, also tested upgrading the 6.8 kernel to 6.14 on my working 22.1 with the same result

The official support of Nvidia 470 driver ended in September 2024.

Thus Linux kernel versions released afterward will not be compatible.

its still showing as the recommended driver in mint and kubuntu, it tries to install but fails with an error at the end of the install process.
not a major problem for me personally, the 6.8 kernel is supported until 2029, should not show up in the driver manager as recommended if it is indeed no longer supported

It can definitely be considered a bug, though it's more of a feature request.. and it's not an easy one to fix. The driver manager doesn't have any info available to tell it if a driver is supported by HWE.

Any card that requires the 470 drivers, should default to nouveau. The 470 drivers should not be installed at all, nor recommended.

There's a person who releases patches to keep this driver working with newer kernels: https://gist.github.com/joanbm. It's a real shame that for an OS that prides itself on working with older hardware many of us are forced to stick with older kernel versions because support has been dropped. I know it's nvidia who've dropped the ball, and what makes it even more maddening is that they still sell the graphics cards for which they've stopped support (I have a GT710) - but it'd be really cool if these patches could be applied upstream so users don't have to jump through all the hoops or worse still, find themselves forced to buy a newer more expensive graphics card. Once in a while I try the Nouveau driver and it's just a woeful experience...

Presumably they have an older nvidia card supported up to version 470 of the proprietary nvidia driver.
