I can't get my livebook katex markdown to generate "display math" -- what am I missing?

According to the "Intro to Livebook" document
( https://github.com/livebook-dev/livebook/blob/main/lib/livebook/notebook/learn/intro_to_livebook.livemd )
I should be able to generate "display math" equations by putting them between $$ $$ markers.
But when I do this, I don't get centered equations on their own lines, I just get inline math.
I'm using

MIX_ENV=prod mix phx.server

to run livebook from the latest main github branch on a linux machine, and behavior is consistent on either firefox or chrome
browsers.

Thank you for the clarifying question! To answer it, I set about creating a minimal example, and realized that it seems I can
get display math by writing e.g.

$$
\left( \frac{a}{c} \right)^2 + \left( \frac{b}{c} \right)^2 = 1 
$$

as long as the $$ signs are alone on their lines!
