With i = 0 and step = 1, you essentially have MOD(0,0) - this is signalling the floating point exception . As far as I see it this is perfectly correct behavior by the compiler. Or do I miss something?

There is also a typo in your program that you will see if you add IMPLICIT NONE to the beginning (start_tep vs start_step). start_tep is not initialized due to the typo and implicit typing.

.AND. and .OR. are not required to be implemented in a short-circuit fashion in Fortran. You need to have a nest of IF statements here.
