Mapbox-gl which is what new maps is based on, has gone proprietary. Maplibre-gl is the popular replacement and is more or less drop-in.
Testing it on branch maplibre.
The base maps need discussion.
Mapbox is expensive at 50000 map loads/month, then 0.5 cents each after for each session
We have several choices for our light, dark, road, aerial needs. We currently use carto, carto, bing, bing respectively. Both have never asked for payment for our level of use. These are raster tiles, not vector ones, so zooming isn't as pretty.
Maptiler is 500,000 tiles for $25/month. But then 0.01 cents per tile afterwards.
We also need to check if MacBooks still hang the entire browser when many maps are loaded.
