add store code to url and single store mode issue

Preconditions and environment

Magento ver. 2.4.8
Problem : Need to remove store code from URL.
Even after doing this from setting the changes is not taking place.
Also
I am experiencing an issue which is related to activating single store mode.
Official documentation states that after keeping one store view all store tab i can safely get my website to single store mode which is not happeing at all the status says "You saved the configuration."
but the screenshot still says No
Any help would be appreciated.

Steps to reproduce

Navigate to admin side of store
Stores > GENERAL > General > Single-store-mode
click on then save config.

Expected result

I can see

Actual result

single-store-mode is not initiated

this issue of enabling single store mode and by default forcing add store code to url is solved after running the command on temrinal root of the magento
php bin/magento config:set general/single_store_mode/enabled 1 --scope=default

and flushing the caches.
php bin/magento cache:flush.

Although i am still concerned with the frontend bug

Could you please confirm whether you have more than one Website or Store configured, even if only a single store view exists?
