T-Rec 3.1 Use web-based GUPRIs that enable the access to the SSSOM mapping metadata and data (e.g. PURL, W3id,...) #66

There is some redundance between the discussion here and in #64, #65, and #71. Suggest pulling these together.
In the case of mappings, the use case (and place to look) for mapping metadata is not clear if the mapping is no longer available at all. Since the SSSOM already includes record_id for individual mappings, I think you are just arguing here that the record_id should be a GUPRI. Of course SSSOM's model can't guarantee resolvability (that's provided by repositories, as is content negotiation for that matter), but I agree in principle with making record_id a GUP(R)I for the time if/when widespread technology can actually resolve individual mapping records. |

Mappings and crosswalks, whether published, stored, or utilized on the web, are regarded as web-based resources. Typically, these resources facilitate the connection between two distinct web-based entities. It is advisable to employ a web-based GUPRI that supports content-negotiation, which allows the client the flexibility to choose the desired representations of the metadata based on his preferences. This identifier system is actually cost-free but it requires agreement on a common URL structure and requires the maintenance of the URL. Regarding the perennity, solutions like PURL supported by the Web Archive guarantee the long term sustainability of the underlying servers.
It is advisable to assign a globally unique, persistent, and resolvable identifier (GUPRI) to metadata assigned to individual mappings as well as collection of mappings. This practice enables systems to get first the metadata e.g. through content negotiation and from the metadata to get the mappings if deemed relevant. In addition, dissociating the metadata record from the mapping allows to maintain the perennity of the metadata even if the mapping does not exist anymore.
