| description | How openmaptiles.org collects and uses data, including the analytics it shares with MapTiler. | |
| keywords | openmaptiles, privacy policy, cookies, analytics, GDPR |
We, the MapTiler team, formally represented by MapTiler AG, ID no: CHE-345.466.193, with registered office at Zugerstrasse 22/Unterägeri, Zug 6314, Switzerland, maintain OpenMapTiles as an open-source project. If you visit our website openmaptiles.org (the "Site"), we process some of your personal data, as described below. MapTiler AG is the data controller responsible for that processing.
The Site has no accounts, forms, or newsletter sign-up - we never ask you to type in personal details. Besides basic, anonymous, non-cookie signals used simply to count page views and measure site performance without collecting any user-related identifiers, the only personal data we process is generated automatically by your browser while you use the Site:
- Technical data - IP address (used only to derive an approximate location, then discarded), browser and device type, operating system, referring page, and the pages you visit.
- Interaction data - which links you click (for example, links to GitHub, to MapTiler's Cloud, Server or Data products, or to a map-style preview). If you use the search box inside our documentation, the text of your search query is recorded together with that interaction, so please avoid typing personal information into it.
We do not run any advertising, retargeting, or social-media pixels on this Site.
A cookie banner asks for your consent before anything other than strictly necessary cookies runs. Only two categories exist on this Site:
| Category | Purpose | Your choice |
|---|---|---|
| Necessary | Remembering your cookie choice; basic site functionality. | Always on - the Site can't work without it |
| Analytics | Understanding how visitors use the Site (Google Analytics). | Off by default - you decide in the cookie banner |
We do not use an advertising or personalization cookie category on openmaptiles.org. You can change your choice at any time using Cookie settings in the footer of any page.
We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the Site.
Part of what OpenMapTiles does is introduce visitors to MapTiler's commercial products (MapTiler Cloud, Server and Data). To measure that, when you click through from openmaptiles.org to a MapTiler domain, an anonymous identifier travels with you so that a later action there - such as creating a MapTiler account - can be counted back as an outcome of your visit here. That signal is also reported to MapTiler's own analytics, so a single funnel report can be built across both. It tells us that an anonymous OpenMapTiles visit converted; it does not give MapTiler a line-by-line copy of your browsing history on this Site.
Because of this cross-domain reporting, MapTiler AG processes this particular analytics data both as the operator of openmaptiles.org and as the operator of maptiler.com. This policy only covers openmaptiles.org; once you're on maptiler.com, cloud.maptiler.com, docs.maptiler.com or data.maptiler.com, MapTiler's own Privacy Policy applies instead.
- Necessary cookies and basic security logging: legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
- Analytics cookies, including the cross-domain measurement above: your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), collected through the cookie banner. You can withdraw consent at any time via Cookie settings.
We use a small number of trusted third-party service providers to run the Site:
- Google - as our analytics processor (Google Analytics).
- CookieScript - as our cookie consent management provider, to record and honour your cookie choice.
- MapTiler AG's other systems - for the cross-domain measurement described above.
Where data is transferred outside the EEA or Switzerland, we rely on approved transfer mechanisms, primarily the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework (DPF) or Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs).
We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with advertisers.
Analytics data is kept for 14 months and then deleted automatically by Google Analytics.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or export the personal data we hold about you, to object to or restrict its processing, and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details above. If you are in the EU/EEA or UK, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority; in Switzerland, MapTiler AG's supervisory authority is the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC).
We may update this policy as the Site or its analytics setup changes.
