TradingView Lightweight Charts Implementation

Implementation Complete!

The OpenAlgo Terminal now uses TradingView Lightweight Charts - the industry-standard charting library used by professional trading platforms.


🎯 What Was Implemented

1. ✅ TradingView Lightweight Charts v4.2.1

  • Library: Official TradingView Lightweight Charts
  • Version: 4.2.1 (latest stable)
  • CDN: unpkg.com (production build)
  • License: Apache 2.0 with attribution requirement

2. ✅ WebView-Based Integration

  • Package: webview_flutter 4.13.0
  • Platform Support: iOS, Android, Web
  • Communication: JavaScript channels for Flutter ↔ Chart interaction
  • Performance: Native WebView rendering for optimal performance

3. ✅ Candlestick Charts

  • Chart Type: Candlestick (primary for trading)
  • Data Format: OHLC (Open, High, Low, Close) + Timestamp
  • Features:
    • Auto-scaling time axis
    • Crosshair for precise price reading
    • Zoom and pan support
    • Responsive design

4. ✅ Multi-Timeframe Support

  • Intervals: All OpenAlgo API intervals
    • Seconds: 5s, 10s, 15s, 30s, 45s
    • Minutes: 1m, 2m, 3m, 5m, 10m, 15m, 20m, 30m
    • Hours: 1h, 2h, 4h
    • Days: D
    • Weeks: W
    • Months: M
  • Selection: Dropdown menu in app bar
  • Default: D (Daily)

5. ✅ Professional UI Features

  • Clean white theme (matches OpenAlgo design)
  • Watermark: "Powered by TradingView"
  • Loading indicators

  • Refresh button
  • Attribution notice (license requirement)

  • Flutter screen wrapping WebView
  • API integration for historical data
  • Interval selection UI

  • Chart event handling

Data Flow:

  1. User Action: Tap "Chart" button on stock
  2. Flutter: Navigate to TradingViewChartScreen
  3. WebView: Load tradingview_chart.html
  4. JavaScript: Initialize TradingView chart, send "chartReady" event
  5. Flutter: Receive ready event, fetch data from OpenAlgo API
  6. API: Return OHLC data with timestamps
  7. Flutter: Convert data to TradingView format, send to WebView
  8. JavaScript: Call setChartData(), render candlesticks
  9. User: Interact with chart (zoom, pan, crosshair)

🚀 Performance Optimizations

1. CDN Loading

  • Uses unpkg.com CDN for fast library loading
  • Standalone build (no external dependencies)
  • Production minified build (smaller size)

2. Efficient Data Transfer

  • JSON serialization for data exchange
  • Batch updates (not per-candle)
  • Time-sorted data for optimal rendering

3. WebView Optimization

  • JavaScript enabled only where needed
  • Background color set to match theme
  • No unnecessary page reloads

4. Memory Management

  • Chart instance properly disposed
  • WebView lifecycle managed
  • Event listeners cleaned up

🔐 License & Attribution

TradingView License Requirements:

Per the Apache 2.0 License, we must:

  1. Include Attribution: "Powered by TradingView" watermark in chart
  2. Include NOTICE: Attribution notice in app footer
  3. Link to TradingView: https://www.tradingview.com

Current Implementation:

In App (Footer Text):

"Charts by TradingView"

Note: For App Store/Play Store submissions, add TradingView attribution in app description.


🧪 Testing Guide

Test Scenarios:

1. Basic Chart Loading

  • Go to Watchlist
  • Tap any stock (e.g., RELIANCE)
  • Tap "Chart" button
  • ✅ Should load candlestick chart
  • ✅ Should show loading indicator
  • ✅ Should display data once loaded

2. Timeframe Selection

  • Open chart
  • Tap clock icon (top-right)
  • Select different intervals (1m, 5m, 1h, D)
  • ✅ Should reload chart with new timeframe
  • ✅ Should show checkmark on selected interval

3. Chart Interactions

  • Pinch to zoom
  • Drag to pan
  • Hover/tap for crosshair
  • ✅ Should respond smoothly
  • ✅ Crosshair should show OHLC values

4. Error Handling

  • Disconnect internet
  • Tap refresh
  • ✅ Should show error message
  • ✅ Should show retry button

5. Refresh

  • Tap refresh icon
  • ✅ Should reload chart data
  • ✅ Should show loading indicator

🐛 Known Limitations

Current Limitations:

  1. No Volume Bars (Yet)

    • TradingView supports volume
    • OpenAlgo API needs to provide volume data
    • Can be added in future
  2. No Technical Indicators (Yet)

    • TradingView supports indicators (MA, RSI, MACD, etc.)
    • Requires additional API calls or client-side calculation
    • Can be added in future
  3. WebView Dependency

    • Requires WebView support
    • iOS 11+, Android 5+
    • Web platform always supported
  4. No Offline Mode

    • Charts require internet connection
    • Historical data not cached
    • Consider implementing cache in future

  • Add volume bars below chart
  • Implement moving averages (SMA, EMA)
  • Add RSI indicator
  • Add MACD indicator

  • Trend lines

Phase 3: Advanced Features

  • Compare multiple symbols
  • Save chart layouts
  • Export chart as image
  • Multiple chart types (Line, Area, Heikin-Ashi)

Phase 4: Real-Time Updates

  • WebSocket integration
  • Live candle updates
  • Tick-by-tick data
  • Price alerts on chart
