Entity Relationship Diagram: symbols used for cardinality aren't clear

I wanted to use mermaid to build an ER diagram but the fact that instead of (0,1), (N,N), (1,N), and so on, there are those symbols, it's a deal breaker. They provide little to no meaning, and seems like it's just something mermaid does, because on the internet or on books I never saw those symbols.

Is it possible to change them to a more common notation, or add a switch to change from a style to another? Thanks
