[Feature Request]: time to switch to a faster preset? #6644

Switching from one global preset with 99% of users to another one is not the preferred solution. Different presets perform differently with different terrain and use cases. What really needs to improve is the spreading out of users across different presets that make the most sense for the location and use case. Several ideas around this have been reducing the number of available presets, and adjusting the display names to not include words with negative connotations like short and slow. |

Seems like now that there's meshing over IP, the ideal solution would be if dense areas got some open long range WiFi hotspots. Maybe repeaters could have a WiFi only mode, where as long as they were connected, they wouldn't try to repeat anything over LoRa, or they'd repeat but with low power or low hop count. Then you could set up a hotspot as a general backbone for a dense area, and hit it with the directional antennas, only using LoRa for the last hop, and people could also use the hotspot for Jami and other IP apps. |

meshtastic via WIFI is an intresting idea , not sure about the feasibility though |

@JQ3B94 it was just announced on the blog for ESP32, and multi-km directional WiFi routers cost about the same as a lot of popular repeater hardware (Although it needs more batteries and solar), so it seems pretty well within reach for a lot of people. |

Nobody I have talked to has gotten even close to a mile, the distance continues to be the issue. |

Description
As of today, there are 5,379 nodes on meshmap.net which is a 509 node increase from last month. Assuming that 500 node per month number holds, that would mean there should be about 9,000 nodes on MeshMap by the end of this year. Based on local observations, only about 40% of nodes have location enabled, which would be a prerequisite for being on MeshMap to begin with. So if there are 9,000 nodes on MeshMap by the end of the year, there should roughly be somewhere between 18,000 and 24,000 nodes total.
Edit: My personal opinion would be to go directly to ShortFast since it's legal across the jurisdictions, unlike ShortTurbo, and it's the fastest you can get. That would also prevent having to make a change again in the future. If ShortFast saturates then there really isnt much you can do.
