Project A with wrap subproject B (with wrap subproject C)

I created a simple project:

project(
    'A',
    'cpp'
)

subproject('gnf')

It uses as a subproject a wrap file which refers to https://github.com/darkonaito/gnf.git, which in turn has another subproject wrap file.
When I try to setup Meson, I get:

subprojects\gnf\meson.build:21:0: ERROR: Subproject exists but has no meson.build file.

If I check gnf's subprojects dnw subfolder, I see that it's empty.
Why isn't Meson downloading the nested subproject? As far as I know, Meson should promote it (it created a dnw.wrap next to gnf.wrap), but I'm still getting this error.

Fixed: Apparently I had an emptry "dnw" folder in gnf subprojects preventing meson from downloading the wrap.
