The 'fort.30' Error

Dear mHM team,

Today at mr. @cuneyd's class, we were assigned to install mHM on our own. Although I struggled a little I must say following these steps were super easy on my behalf on Windows 11: https://mhm-ufz.org/guides/install-win/

However I couldn't manage to get this line work:

(/root/mhm_env) root@PC:~# conda config --set channel priority strict

Terminal says:

usage: conda [-h] [-V] command ...
conda: error: unrecognized arguments: strict

As I carried on and typed "mhm" then hit enter:

(/root/mhm_env) root@PC:~# mhm

While reinstalling Conda and all, I started questioning if am I installing it to the correct folder or should I have it installed under /mhm_work/installation ?

Miniconda3 will now be installed into this location:
/home/emresalkim/miniconda3

Thanks for posting your query. Its a very useful one for discussion.

Based on the output you provided on your first comment, it looks as if mhm has already been compiled properly i.e. you have the executable file named mhm. When you typed mhm it ran, although with some error.

So I would say you do not need to re-do any of the steps up to mhm compilation.

In regards to the error you got while running mhm, it looks as if the folder in which you have your mhm executable doesn't have the .nml files (namelist files). Please make sure about this. For your reference I am adding a screenshot.

Once mhm is kept along side the namelist files, mhm knows what are the input, output data paths, model setup info, etc. Thus these namelist files are in fact control files for mhm. If everything goes well, the runtime screen would show more information during the mhm run. Basically, you would be running the test domains and a success would mean your mhm is correctly compiled and ready to use for your application.

Of course, for your project, you can prepare another folder with your input data, namelist files and copy the mhm executable in the folder. Let us know when you reach that point and we can provide you with further suggestions.

Thank you very much for your detailed explanation. I think I'm about to solve the issue.

Here's the thing, when I close Ubuntu I lose all mhm files. To solve this I'm thinking of putting the mhm folder manually to the necessary folder via Windows Explorer.

Where should I place the mhm files after unzipping them? Under mhm_work or mhm_env or somewhere else?

I tried what I described above. Now I don't lose mhm files after I put the files under mhm_work/installation. Whenever I start Ubuntu and I type mhm in installation folder, mHM works flawlessly.

Great to hear that your system is working!

The disappearing of mhm files is weird. I am guessing you already know this, but you can access your windows 11 OS folders via the Ubuntu terminal/ command line using

cd /mnt/<name of the drive>/....

You can check the available drive paths using

ls /mnt

Once you have your stuffs on the windows OS folders, it should be safe.
