issues running dotnet.exe on Windows with Azure DevOps artifact feeds

I've been bashing away at this for a while now, but removing and reinstalling the plugin isn't getting me anywhere.

No amount of dotnet restore --interactive prompts ever results in an interactive login, so we're stuck with using user-managed PAT tokens which I really don't like relying on at scale.

I've installed both the netcore and netfx plugins (we use both core and framework), removed both, installed just netcore to be safe... nothing works.
This is on vanilla Windows machines, so should be the most straightforward scenario.

I can't tell if the plugin is actually being used, but even when trying to use CredentialProvider.Microsoft.exe directly, nothing seems to happen.

Any guidance appreciated.

@thedangander - are you still running into this issue? If so, a few follow-up questions to help diagnose further:

• Could you provide any redacted logs showing the credential provider being invoked during the restore process? Please redact any feed urls you do not wish to share publicly. You can use the following command to generate detailed output:

  dotnet restore --interactive --verbosity detailed

• Which .NET SDK version are you currently using?

• Is it possible that the restore is completing successfully, but interactive authentication isn’t triggered due to credential caching or the use of a WAM broker?

Let me know what you find—happy to dig deeper once we have more details.

I think the issue is the credential provider not being invoked. There's nothing in the restore command response to suggest it has been:

Can you check where the Credential Provider is downloaded on your machine? For version 1.4.1 (.NET 8) the path should look like:

%UserProfile%/.nuget/plugins/netcore/CredentialProvider.Microsoft/CredentialProvider.Microsoft.(dll|exe)

To ensure it is installed correctly, I highly recommend using the install script. And try clearing any existing installations by deleting the entire plugins folder before reinstalling. You don’t need the netfx version for dotnet cli.

To enable logging from the NuGet client:

$tempdir = [IO.Path]::GetTempPath()
$env:NUGET_PLUGIN_LOG_DIRECTORY_PATH = Join-Path $tempdir "pluginlog"
$env:NUGET_CREDENTIALPROVIDER_LOG_PATH = Join-Path $env:NUGET_PLUGIN_LOG_DIRECTORY_PATH "artifacts-credprovider.log"

Also check if any of these env vars are set:
NUGET_NETFX_PLUGIN_PATHS, NUGET_NETCORE_PLUGIN_PATHS, or NUGET_PLUGIN_PATHS
If so, try unsetting them to default to %UserProfile%/.nuget/plugins.

Then clear NuGet caches and try restore again:

dotnet nuget locals all --clear
dotnet restore --interactive --verbosity detailed

Let me know what the logs show.

Sorry for the slow response - it's been a busy month!

The plugin is installed properly, and was done using the script.

None of those env vars are set.

I enabled logging and ran dotnet restore --interactive --verbosity detailed but no logs were written at the path, so it's like Nuget plugins just aren't being discovered at all, which is very odd!

That is very interesting considering I would expect the logs from the nuget client with the credential provider plugin discovery to be written to temdir/pluginlog since we know nuget is being invoked.

Other actions we could try would be to upgrade dotnet sdk and try clearing the nuget cache with dotnet nuget locals all -clear

I have been experiencing this problem too. When I am using the CLI or even Rider, I wind up getting the warnings like this:

Warning NU1900 : Error occurred while getting package vulnerability data: Unable to load the service index for source https://pkgs.dev.azure.com/REDACTED/_packaging/REDACTED/nuget/v3/index.json.

No amount of dotnet restore --interactive resolves it. The only way it gets working again is to open Visual Studio, rebuild the solution so that the magic under the hood happens in Visual Studio to restore and evaluate the packages is done, and then about a week later or so, I am back where I started. I, too, have installed the Azure Credential Provider using the installation script.

I ran this in my console: dotnet restore --verbosity detailed And much to my surprise, I didn't get any verbose output at all.

I got this for all of my NuGet packages. (I'm just pasting in one of them for brevity's sake)

Since the credprovider does not look like its even getting invoked I wonder if its related to this issue on nuget:NuGet/Home#13615.

I would try clearing the nuget locals with :

dotnet nuget locals all --clear and then trying to clear the obj directory ?

@embetten When you are talking about clearing the obj directory you are referring to the obj directory of my project, correct? Not a directory under the Nuget credential provider's folder?
