Should color of the status icon for Personas be preserved in Contrast Themes?

The persona component contains an icon to indicate availability status. The status is communicated both through color and symbol. But since this color has meaning, should it be preserved and not changed when the user is using a contrast theme? Or is it more important that only the colors of the theme are used?
