How to handle long-term asynchronous tasks (c#)

Hi

I wonder how to best handle "waits" - I want to send requests to people via teams (or other chat systems) and then react once they answer.
I imagine something like this:

• chat with the system and tell it to collect information
• an agent specifies the process
• a "teams chat agent" writes to the required people
• a background task checks again and again if there was a reply to one the questions
• ... how will the agents proceed to work on this and update the stored chat protocol / history so I can see it once I (as the initial start of the process) come back to the interaction with the system?

Is there a clean way of doing this?
