Debug C project which is using makefile

I need to debug fsearch by running make && ./src/fsearch

How can I debug this project (breakpoints, inspect variables ...) using vscode?

I am using the following vscode extension.

ms-vscode.cpptools
ms-vscode.makefile-tools
