When I first started using notebooks in VS Code, the biggest source of friction was the UI layout. I was a dedicated classic notebook user and all the additional buttons/tool bars were very distracting and confusing.
VS Code has extensions for keybinding pre-sets for other editors like vim and sublime, which can make it easier to onboard.
I would love to have notebook UI setting pre-sets for other notebook interfaces so that making that switch can be easier. I know this can make it hard to see all the unique features of notebooks in VS Code, so maybe just having one additional menu button to surface those in other layouts would work...
