attached images not displayed by <img> tag - any workaround?

A markdown cell (using an embedded/attached image file)

displays the first image, but not the second one. It works in Jupyter (in a web browser), but not in VSCode with the Jupyter extension. Is there a way around it? I'd like set the width of the image (it's high-resolution) and I don't know how to do it in a "pure markdown" way.
