Confusing API and lack of examples

I'm trying to use the new 3.0 API and i find it extremely confusing.
I think it would help to have some easy to understand examples around. I've tried to read the tests but they are equally confusing or use the tar-unix API which i'm not after.

In particular if there can be some example of the tar.gz API for both read and write, that would be extremely useful.
