About PBR rendering in recent commit ellipsoids shape

Hi,
I was wondering whether the new ellipsoids shape plugin can currently be used in the same way as other shapes—such as a triangular mesh with a BSDF attribute—for PBR rendering. I’d like to integrate it into Mitsuba 3 to perform inverse rendering of this shape with its BSDF. Is supporting that part of your future development plans?

Hi @Start1er

The shape can be used as any other geomertry in Mitsuba, but there are two caveats:

• The backfaces are always culled
• Differentiating the ellipsoid shape is not possible with any integrator we currently ship. We expect that most people that use this ellispoids plugins will be writing their own custom integrator to enable differentiation of their properties/geometry.
