Unable to install in a VMWare Workstation EFI VM, pmbr no such file or directory

I tried to install from the mfsbsd-mini-14.1-RELEASE-amd64.iso ISO on VMWare Workstation 17.5.0 build-22583795.
It is configured with a virtual nvme disk, EFI, 4G RAM, secure boot disabled.

The mfsbsd-14.1-RELEASE-amd64.iso image does install fine.

Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or if perhaps the mini image isn't supposed to be installable.

I spoke too soon. The other image installs, but does not boot afterwards. So neither ISO appears to work in EFI mode.
