Bring Back the "Prevent Page Refresh (Ctrl+R)" Setting for Typing Tests

Hi Monkeytype team,

First off - love the platform, it's hands-down the best typing site out there.

I noticed that the "Prevent page refresh" setting (which used to block Ctrl + R / F5) seems to be missing in the latest update, or at least it’s no longer accessible from the main settings or command line.

This setting was incredibly useful for avoiding accidental reloads mid-test, especially for people like me who type fast and occasionally hit Ctrl unintentionally.

Could you please consider bringing it back or adding a toggle again in settings/command line? Even a hidden config flag or preset-based workaround would be appreciated.

Hey @Miodec - appreciate the response!

I think I know what you mean now, it’s the default browser prompt that kicks in for longer sessions. But for some reason, it’s not triggering at all for me anymore, even on long tests.

I’m guessing something might’ve changed with how the page handles unload events? Either way, it'd be super helpful if there was a way to manually enable a safeguard like that, even just a hidden toggle or command.

which test settings are you using and which browser. Can you try in incognito/private mode without any browser extensions.

Hey @fehmer, I’m using Brave, and I just tested again in a private window with no extensions. Same result - no prompt shows up when I hit Ctrl+R during an active test.

Also tried in Chrome (same test settings, private mode, no extensions), and still no “Are you sure?” prompt either.

For test settings, I’ve tried 15s, 30s, and 60s standard typing tests.

15s, 30s or 60s are not long tests. Try a test with 10000 words.

It works on 10,000-word tests.

Would still be great to have this for shorter tests or as a setting we can turn on. I sometimes hit Ctrl+R by accident during 30s runs 😅

Found out you can just change your keybinds on Brave browser to exclude Control + R. Thanks everyone.
