Members can volunteer to present a recent paper in NLP that they find interesting. These volunteers will have about 20 minutes to review the paper. We plan to have about three speakers per meeting and meet once a week. Any student can attend. Presenting is not required. Meeting will be held simultaneously in ENB 224 and on TEAMS. \n\nPlease let your students know about this opportunity to become more familiar with recent NLP research and to present if they are so inclined. We are currently working on find a meeting date that accommodates the most students. Unfortunately, much of what is being said is either dramatically overexaggerated, or dramatically underexaggerated. I will provide a soft introduction to the technological and natural language processing (NLP) advances that made ChatGPT possible, to provide a clearer perspective on what kind of reasoning ChatGPT and its relatives are and are not capable of. But more importantly, I attempt to provide a balanced take on what is coming next, drawing from current research into reasoning using large language models. I will argue, in no uncertain terms: any educator at the college level who is not planning on adjusting their course to prepare for the changes that are already here is in real trouble. \n\n [Join via Microsoft Teams](https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_NjAxY2QxYmEtYWMxMS00MmMyLWE5YjAtOTM5OWI0Y2JiZTcw%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%22741bf7de-e2e5-46df-8d67-82607df9deaa%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%22a4f34152-dd02-421b-a070-bbb003895dde%22%7d)"

- image: BSCCOgap.png
- description: Why does cuprate superconductivity break down at a certain doping level? Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy we find that an emerging metallic matrix inside the superconducting state is responsible for the overall reduction of Tc and the superfluid density, while leaving the gapsize unchanged. The formation of the matrix is tied to a pair breaking process violating a core principle of mean-field theories.

Using ARPES, STM, and quantum oscillations, we find good agreement for the Fermi surface topography and carrier effective masses. Hence, the apparent absence of such an agreement in other quantum materials, including the cuprates, suggests that the electronic states in these materials are of different, non-Fermi liquid-like nature. +# - title: "Exploiting Linguistic Style as a Cognitive Biometric for Continuous Verification"
+# image:
+# description: This paper presents an assessment of continuous verification using linguistic style as a cognitive biometric. In stylometry, it is widely known that linguistic style is highly characteristic of authorship using representations that capture authorial style at character, lexical, syntactic, and semantic levels. In this work, we provide a contrast to previous efforts by implementing a one-class classification problem using Isolation Forests. Our approach demonstrates the usefulness of this classifier for accurately verifying the genuine user, and yields recognition accuracy exceeding 98% using very small training samples of 50 and 100-character blocks.

+# - title: "Style Signatures to Combat Biometric Menagerie in Stylometry"
+# image:
+# description: In this paper, we investigate the challenges of using a person's writing style as a cognitive biometric modality by applying Doddington's idea of Biometric menagerie. To the best of our knowledge, biometric menagerie analysis has been on performed on a cognitive biometric modality for the first time. The presence of goats, wolves and lambs in this modality is demonstrated using two publicly available datasets - Blogs and IMDB1M. To combat this challenging problem, we further propose using person-specific features referred to as "Style signatures" which may be better at distinguishing different individuals. Experimental results show that using person-specific Style signatures improve verification by 3.6-5.5% on both datasets.

+# - title: "A Transition-based Parser for Unscoped Episodic Logical Forms"
+# image: ulf_transition_parser.png
+# description: This paper presents the first learned approach for parsing sentences into ULFs, using a growing set of annotated examples. Our method learns a sequence-to-sequence model for predicting the transition action sequence within a modified cache transition system and provides a strong baseline for future improvement. We also evaluate the efficacy of type grammar-based constraints, a word-to-symbol lexicon, and transition system state features in this task.

+# - title: "Montague Induction Grammar"
+# image: montague_induction_grammar.png
+# description: Here, we propose a computational modeling framework for inducing combinatory categorial grammars from arbitrary language data. This framework provides fine-grained control over the assumptions that the induced grammar should conform to. In a proof-of-concept experiment, we deploy our framework for use in distributional analysis of the relationship between s(emantic)-selection and c(ategory)-selection, using as input a lexicon-scale acceptability judgment dataset focused on English verbs’ syntactic distribution and enforcing standard assumptions from the semantics literature on the induced grammar.
