allow building branches from forks

Via API, it is possible to build a branch of the configured repository.
It would be very useful to allow building from branches of a fork (or, alternatively, any repo). That way, users could push to their fork, then use the API (e.g., through the cli nicely wrapped in make) to build & test without going through a PR.
