This isn't an open issue per se, but a note to others, if they need install help.
I had an install error on a mac.

QMAKESPEC has not been set, so configuration cannot be deduced.
Error processing project file: /Users/andrewmorgan/runcircos-gui/src/runcircos-gui.pro

This setting fixed it:

export QMAKESPEC=macx-g++

after some further issues

sudo yum install harfbuzz

helped to resolve some issues with a failed make, which on my centos system presented as:

final comments (I hope).

It's taken me quite some time to install this software. I had many issues, and put my fixes in these comments. Here's my setup:

I'm running a mac, and tried to compile and install this on macos - but had many small issues.
So - I dropped this approach and moved to compile and install on my centos server.

The second comment above helped resolve some compile issues - which are apparently commonly reported, but for which finding a solution is particularly hard.

the issue is the qmake on your system, and its provenance. installing harfbuzz was the solution.

The next issue I had was to get the xterm working on my mac from centos, which I had never needed before. For several hours I actually struggled to get this working - despite a well configured system in most other respects.

The final fix was to ensure that x11 forwarding was enabled with an offset

sudo cat /etc/ssh/sshd_config | grep X
X11Forwarding yes
X11DisplayOffset 10

and also - that I had the right things installed to run xterm properly. I needed:

sudo yum install xorg-x11-xauth
> Package xorg-x11-fonts-Type1-7.5-9.el7.noarch already installed and latest version
sudo yum install xorg-x11-fonts-*
sudo yum install xorg-x11-utils

The last two packages weren't actually installed.
Once they were, everything was fixed.

I now
ssh -X myname@myhostlinuxbox
and then
cd runcircos-gui/src
and then I run it with
./runcircos-gui
and the result is the following:

Now, all that is left to do is test I can generate circos diagrams!
(note to author: sorry to abuse the issues / comments section of this repo on github - but I think the notes could be helpful for others, and proves this package is actually working and installable. Also - Thank you very much for publishing your work in the open community to use, a circos front end is badly needed by many and a great idea.)

@minkymorgan that was quite an effort. In case any more users experience such issues, please let me know.
you can build this in both qt4 & qt5 with minimal efforts. in case of problems mentioned above, or other compiler related conflict issues related to system installed default qt packages, please download and install qt5(5.11) from https://www.qt.io/download and build the project against the newly installed qt.
