XRDP: "Login failed" after modification (and reset) of "crypt_level" #2819

I do use xrdp (0.9.21.1-1) on Debian 11 and it works out of the box without problems. Most of the time I do use Windows 10 remote desktop as client.

Because I tried to improve the frame today I modified /etc/xrdp/xrdp.ini and set the variable crypt_level= from its default value high to none. The loging faild without error message. I was asked for login credentials, I wrote them in and then the connection got lost. OK, I set the value back to high´. Nothing changed. The login problem is still there. Then I tried on Debian the XRDP-Client remmina`. Here the behavior is the same except that I got an "Login Failed" message.

I would say I have not changed anything at all. But I tried to reset the whole setup back to its default install state.

$ rm /etc/xrdp/xrdp.ini
$ apt-get install --reinstall -o Dpkg::Options::="--force-confmiss" xrdp

This does not help.

Your problem appears to be related to xfce:-

There's a similar post to yours here withe the same faulting address (0x2c is a comma in UTF-8). Does that help at all?

It suggests your XFCE config is corrupted.

This doesn't look like an XRDP problem to me. It looks like an XFCE problem.

Try renaming these config directories in your regular user (you can always put them back):-

cd ~/.config
mv xfce4 xfce4.save
mv xfce4-session xfce4-session.save

Then try logging in.

To put them back:-

cd ~/.config
mv -T xfce4.save xfce4
mv -T xfce4-session.save xfce4-session

You need '-T' in case the target directories already exist.

I assume my config is not corrupt because I'm able to login into that account the usual way.
Removing the config folders/files does not help to find a solution.
The question is what the problem here is and how to solve it.

That's not a good assumption. There's more in the config than the settings for a single session.

Other than suggesting you temporarily remove bits of the config until it works I can't help you any further. xfce4-session is segfaulting. You'll need the involvement of XFCE4 developers to find the exact root cause of this.

I still have not answer form the XFCE folks but warmed up the thread today. Currently I have no idea about further diagnosis or a solution.

Not a solution but a workaround from the XFCE folks.
If the user is not logged in then the login via RDP works.

So the problem is no reproducible.

I didn't get the impression that you might have been trying to do this when I triaged your issue. The FAQ is valid regardless of the desktop used.

This confuses me because in the past it was no problem to have the same user logged in twice at the same time. The problem occurred after I modified the config and didn't disappear after I reset the config back to its past defaults.

It worked on earlier Debian versions which didn't make as much use of systemd --user. You could also install the dbus-x11 package which made XFCE look like it was working.

If there was a simple solution we'd have found it by now - we've certainly tried! Multiple graphical sessions for the same user simply aren't supported by systemd. There's a link on the FAQ article.

I did not updated the Debian major version.
I slightly do understand the systmed problem.
But again: It worked before, then I modified a config, reset it back to its previous state. Then the problem appeared.

That it worked before might be an accident? ;)

ThE recommendation (if you can) is to use a separate account for your xrdp session. Then the problem can't arise at all.
