Upon entering credentials the RDP session closes within a few seconds leaving the Xorg session running in the background

hey guys, I've installed xrdp as a server a few times and gotten it working, and I rolled out a new machine today and for the life of me I dont think I'm doing anything different than before but shortly seconds after login the RDP session gets closed, but the Xorg session continues in the background. I dont think I've had this issue before. What do you think might be the cause? There are a few errors but some seem pretty benign.

@kfoxirl - thanks for raising this. It's easier to use github than gitter (IMO), and there's more public visibility of the issue.

Can you provide us with a bit more info:-

• (raised by @akarl10 on Gitter) you say the connection gets drop a few seconds after connecting but the sessions stays up: Are you able to reconnect to the session?
• The logs you have provided look to me like the Xorg session is not staying up. When you say "the Xorg session continues in the background", is it possible the session you are seeing is another session logged in at the same time? Could this be this issue in the FAQ?

hmm. I see that the in the first actual line you have exec xterm.

could you try replacing that with

exec /usr/bin/xterm > $HOME/.xterm-stdout.log  2> $HOME/.xterm-err.log

On the "next" login try on your home folder there should be both files. The output should give us some clues

stdout is empty. err shows the following.

So running sudo Xorg :10 -auth .Xauthority -config xrdp/xorg.conf -noreset -nolisten tcp -logfile .xorgxrdp.%s.log
Lets me launch xterm at least but it did throw an error in the output from Xorg. Failed to open authorization file ".Xauthority": No such file or directory. I fixed that by install xauth and generating one. I can launch xterm to the WSLg Weston instance so xterm definitely works.

What I dont see is unless I run Xorg manually is the socket in /tmp/.X11-unix/ so its like Xorg isn't even getting started by xrdp-sesman even though the log indicates it should be started and there is no xorgxrdp.%s.log in home.

sesman actually stops Xorg when the display manager stops. If you change the exec line to be without exec in front and put a lets say sleep 60 you should see Xorg up to one minute, at least if it not crashes.

Do you know what version of xrdp you are using? On newer ones a wait-for-x utility was added that should guarantee that x is up and running before starting the wm.

a quick test could be (if your xrdp does not include this utility yet) putting a sleep 2 before launching xterm

Making some progress now, I got it to launch xterm in xrdp :)
I had to create /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config

OK, all fixed, thank you for the help guys, you definitely put me on the right track. For prosperity the steps I took to get everything working. I built from source in order to get the GPU acceleration options then:

1. Install xauth and generate an Xauthority file
2. Create /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config and allow all users not just root to launch an Xorg session

After that I was able to launch xterm, and then upon installing a wm (i3 in my case) I can now launch the window manager successfully.

@kfoxirl - you shouldn't need to create /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config. It should be sufficient to make sure that there's a path to Xorg in the [Xorg] stanza in the sesman.ini file. There are some instructions in the file itself.
