Why to use beta version for next.js ?

Is it supposed to be normal to install a 'beta' version?

We use it in production, so ...?

This project is basically abandonware so either install beta, install alternative like lucia or roll your own

This project, I see, received commits one month ago.
Why do you define it abandonware?
It's crucial for me understand if this is an opinion (I understand it a lot) or it's the reality. Because we're starting the nth project with next-auth and if it's not a good idea we can make a switch right now.

Because it's in beta for over 2 years now, it's never going to be marked as stable

Thanks @realtebo – Please I also need to know! We’re launching a new project on Next.js 15 with the App Router, so we’ll need Auth.js (NextAuth v5). Is the current v5 beta mature enough for production use, and do you have an ETA for a stable GA release within the next few months?

We are crrently using v5.beta.19 in about 20 projects.
Yes it's stable.
But none of them are high importance or long-term projects
But yes, we will not use it anymore if 5.beta.x will never be promoted to stable
