Is non-android client devices without native Android auto possible?

Hello, just curious: is there a way to connect a lower-spec device that can't emulate android with android-auto (like a slow laptop for example) since there is no android auto on linux? 
Trying to get away from android devices, and alternatives aren't quite powerful enough to run a whole extra OS.
