For reference, I proposed a general, scalable, transparent, and long-term viable LLM policy establishment framework: NixOS/nixpkgs#410741 (comment). Since Stylix only has a couple reviewers, unlike Nixpkgs and its entire NixOS ecosystem, we can skip my proposed LLM policy establishment framework and just somewhat arbitrarily adopt a LLM policy.

requirement, which is a more loose variant of the Developer’s Certificate of Origin, already disallows LLM-generated content with ambiguous licensing. Practically and somewhat understandably, I assume everyone unconditionally ticks this checkbox without fully understanding the license implications. I suspect several merged PRs already contain LLM content, although I did not gatekeep on that matter because the final code ultimately met our quality standards.

I agree that the current LLM competence is far below anything I consider acceptable for real work. However, judging from PRs with suspected LLM involvement, the only potentially viable LLM use case for us may be generating or polishing themes, provided they are manually verified. For anything related to design or actual code, LLMs are basically irrelevant.

Unless we entirely ban LLM contributions, I suggest strict LLM disclosures based on my proposed "Manual", "Syntactic", "Semantic", and "Unaudited" categories:

PRs and issues could be labeled by LLM-involvement tiers, enabling reviewers to filter contributions based on their LLM tolerance:

Label	Description
13.llm: 0	Manual: The absence of LLMs would result in equal results and quality.
13.llm: 1	Syntactic: Includes non-negligible LLM content.
13.llm: 2	Semantic: LLM involved in design decisions or core logic.
13.llm: 3	Unaudited: LLM output with little to no human verification.

The labels are designed to be independent of the quantity of LLM content and such that 13.llm: n has less LLM involvement than 13.llm: n+1.

Logistically, the 13.llm: n labels could be automatically applied by adding something like the following checkboxes to the PR and issue templates, and having CI apply the appropriate label based on the marked checkbox:

• LLM-involvement tier (select exactly one):
  • 13.llm: 0: Manual: The absence of LLMs would result in equal results and quality.
  • 13.llm: 1: Syntactic: Includes non-negligible LLM content.
  • 13.llm: 2: Semantic: LLM involved in design decisions or core logic.
  • 13.llm: 3: Unaudited: LLM output with little to no human verification.

To avoid uncategorized PRs and issues when none or multiple of the checkboxes are marked, they could default to the following label:

Label	Description
13.llm: -1	Unknown: LLM involvement is unknown.

Alternatively, when multiple checkboxes are marked, CI could gracefully apply the highest selected tier. For example, if both the 13.llm: 1 and 13.llm: 2 labels are selected, the 13.llm: 2 label should be applied.

When introducing the 13.llm: n labels, the 13.llm: -1 label should be applied to all open PRs and issues that have not yet been applied any 13.llm: n label.

Considering the inherent LLM discrimination introduced by the 13.llm: n labels, malicious or dishonest contributors might intentionally miscategorize their contributions towards 13.llm: 0 to potentially avoid being ignored by LLM skeptics. Unless it becomes obvious that a non-negligible amount of contributions are intentionally miscategorized, I suggest faithfully assuming contributors to be honest, before designing a LLM ban procedure.

Within reason, maintainers should be free to change the LLM-involvement tier label of PRs and issues.

I'd also like to entirely disallow LLM usage in the creation of issues, aside from translation.

Also this reminds me, reviving doc: add contributing guide would be good, although clearly we don't have enough of the stylix core team available to author and review it.

I have other ethical issues with the usage of LLMs (bias, resource usage, harms to authors and creatives), but unless the rest of the core team agrees with me on this we should keep it out of our AI policy (focus on what we can agree on, don't get bogged down in complicated issues unrelated to the project).

IIUC, your (1) corresponds to my 13.llm: 3, your (2) merges my 13.llm: 1 and 13.llm: 2, and your (3) corresponds to my 13.llm: 0. I believe there is value in distinguishing between generating "boilerplate" (13.llm: 1) and delegating thinking (13.llm: 2), with flawed designs being useless regardless of their perfect implementation. I also really like my "syntactic" and "semantic" terminology.

Since reviewing issues and PRs both take time, it would be better to generalize this to any LLM contribution.

Considering our number of problematic LLM contributions is fairly low and they are fortunately still very easy to spot, I suppose banning them might be too strict for the time being. However, classifying LLM usage would still reduce maintainer frustration. For example, I am curious whether Nixpkgs receives a negligible amount of LLM slop.

Yes, it saddens me we lack the manpower. I might have more time for Stylix in a month.

Since justifying LLM disclosures at this point is probably irrelevant and the checkbox explanations are IMHO well-balanced between being unnecessarily specific and leaving faithful room for interpretation, we would no longer need an additional AI_POLICY.md equivalent.

This would simplify the migration to the labeling system if we later prefer to filter submissions based on their LLM-involvement:

In that case, the migration would simply be implementing the automatic label application. This implementation would also resolve the very desired #1616.
