FieldMaps with a Work Item Type Mapping

Can custom fields from a custom work item type, such as "User Story", in a source Azure DevOps (ADO) be mapped to a different work item type, like "Product Backlog Item", in a target Azure DevOps environment?

Soooooo! The field maps work against the target type so if the target is a "Product Backlog Item" and the source is a "User Story" then you would do a mapping for "Product Backlog Item". Field maps are applied after the work item type has been decided.

Then in the config find the WorkItemTypeDefinition section and add the core type map there.

@MrHinsh, Thank you for the explanation, I have tried that and it maps the normal fields however my question was how to map a custom field in User Story say Custom,SubFieldName1 to Custom.SubFieldName2 in Product Backlog Item assuming that Custom.SubFieldName1 is not present and cannot be created in Product Backlog Item.

Please refer to the list of field maps in the documentation!

You would need to pick one one of the following:

1. Map it to another field using a field map
2. Ignore it
3. Add that custom field to the target.
