During combat I've noticed that, if they are not being actively engaged by their targets, fights and other craft will tend to just sit still and shoot at their target, making them perfect targets for another craft to engage. In order to minimize this maybe make it so that the AI fighters, when they have a target, are always moving at least a little so that they aren't such easy targets for other craft to engage.
To exemplify this I would like to share that almost every time I've played the 'Headhunt' mission I've been able to destroy all enemy craft, and many times I've won with little to no hull damage, while almost every time my wingman gets killed within the first minute after the big group of pirates jumped in.
