Since quite a bit of code has changed, this is a beta / RC release before v10.1.0 is released. I don't expect there to be any new bugs, though.

Versions 10.0.4(s), 10.0.5(s) and 10.0.6(s) were released by other people in various forks, here's a larger version jump to 10.0.9 / 10.1.0 so we don't have conflicting plugin builds with the same version numbers.

Notable changes:

• Couple bugfixes for Calibre 4 and Calibre 6 (fixes Calibre 4.23 issue removing DRM #101 and Obok not running in Calibre 6.2.1 #114)
• A bunch of bugfixes for odd PDF files (fixes Corruption in PDF files when DRM removed #104, Plugin not decrypting PDF with "hardened" DRM (ADE 3.0) #183 and DeDRM fails to decrypt: encryption EBX_HANDLER (IndexError: list index out of range) #233)

Remove the book from calibre. Download it again with Kindle for PC installed on the same computer and user as calibre/DRM and import that copy.

After intalling the KFX-Tool, I was able to import and - after converting to epub - read the book in Calibre.
So, DRM seems to be gone, thanks a lot!!

Looking for DeDRM or NoDRM to allow me to remove the DRM from a Kindle e-book bought one week ago from Amazon that arrived as .....kfx-zip file. I have tried installing the v10.0.9 DeDRM zip file along with KFX Input v2.5.0 and KFX Output v2.3.0 but still it does not work (and the DeDRM does not appear in the 'List of plug-ins: Installed).

I am using Calibre v 6.06, Kindle 8th Generation Firmware v5.16.2.1.1

I've just checked several ways of adding kfx format books with my own Kindle and was able to successfully remove the drm. With the Kindle plugged in, click add books and navigate to the documents folder on the Kindle. Select the book and click open. Or open the same location in file explorer and drag and drop the book into calibre. If you're going to copy a kfx book to the computer and add from there, be sure to copy the corresponding folder of files as well. Then you can either use add books or drag and drop. The KFX Input plugin needs the files in their original folder structure to get all the info needed so DeDRM can then decrypt it. Hope that makes it more clear.

With the Kindle plugged into my PC, I opened Calibre - which now shows 'Library' and 'Device'.
With Calibre selected on 'Library', I clicked on 'Add books', then I selected 'Documents' on the Kindle (E: drive in File Explorer) and chose the book 'Maybe Now_B09ZBL8GNJ.sdr', then right clicked on it and selected 'Open'.
File Explorer now shows the contents of 'Maybe Now_B09ZBL8GNJ.sdr' that contains the files/folders that I sent you in a screen capture in my first reply (Assets, data, AssetDownloadMetadata.meta, B09ZBL8GNJ.mf etc etc).
I highlighted all the files and folders and tried drag & drop but it added 9 individual "books" (as it referred to them) as you can see on the attachment.

Don't click the folder. Click the kfx file that's in the documents folder. KFX Input will take care of gathering up the other files.

Sorry to be a real nuisance but there isn't a kfx file in the Kindle documents, there are 3 kfx files in total (see attachments).
I was expecting, from past experience, either an azw or kfx file that would be with the book title e.g. 'Maybe Now.kfx'
but instead I received 'Maybe Now.kfx-zip' that was loaded into Auds Kindle by Amazon wirelessly. Now in Kindle documents it is 'Maybe Now_B09ZBL8GNJ.sdr' with a couple of folders .

A kfx-zip file is not from Amazon. That is created by the KFX Input plugin and then for whatever reason the DRM wasn't removed. So not sure how it got saved back to the Kindle or what happened to the original kfx file. But try adding the kfx-zip to calibre and see if the DRM is removed now. If that doesn't do it, try downloading a new copy to the Kindle and importing that.

Tried a different approach - got book delivered to my PC which arrived as an AZW3, opened Calibre and selected Add books then selected the book from File Explorer. Book now visible in Calibre but still will not convert.
Any suggestions?

i need some help. i have calibre for windows and calibre portable installed. on calibre portable, i managed to get everything working. however, on calibre for windows, the file loads fine, but no metadata (book name, author) or cover image appears. if i open the viewer, everything appears fine too. but then i'd have to edit all the metadata manually, which would be a lot of work. i think it's some setting i'm missing, since on calibre portable i've had no problems. does anyone know how i can solve it?

Interestingly, I had something very similar to this.

The titles come through as a load of random characters with ".azw" on the end, eg "CR!36AADDNP6N4P79H8SMCND4W5MWG3.azw".
For me though, the author, cover image and publisher are all correct and I can also convert the file successfully. I too have the "Read metadata from file contents rather than file name" option ticked.

I've found that rather than adding books from folders and subfolders (and treating multiple files as the same book), if I just do a single folder and point it explicitly at the .azw file, then it imports correctly. If I point it at the .azw.md file, than it imports with the long gibberish name. So it appears the question is how to stop it trying to import the .azw.md files instead of the .azw ones? Under Adding Books prefs - Adding Actions - Rules to filter added files, I added "Ignore if the filename ends with .md". That seems to have sorted my problem!

I couldn't find the problem. When I uninstalled the program other times, there were traces of the old settings and it still didn't work. So I followed a few tips. I uninstalled the program again, deleted the Calibre configuration directory (%APPDATA%\calibre), cleaned up the registry, installed it again and, well, it worked. Something was wrong, but I no longer had the patience to find the error. Thanks to everyone who tried to help!

Hi Elle, thanks for your response. I am now able to decrypt KFX using the latest softwares suggested in this thread. The only issue I see is with the cover page where the link for cover page in the TOC of the book is not working. Any idea how to fix that ?

I don't know. If you convert it into azw3 or epub, then you could use calibre's ebook editor. But that might introduce more issues.

It looks like DRM removal is successful, but the KFX Input plugin is still unable to convert it. You could ask over in the KFX Input thread over at MobileRead: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=291290

From that log it appears that the .kfx-zip file used was manually generated and included AppleDouble files, those with names matching data files but with a "._" prefix.

The next release of the KFX Input plugin will ignore those unexpected files.

Assume you have Kobo Desktop installed on the same computer and user as calibre/Obok and that you have books downloaded. Or you have a Kobo attached with books downloaded.

What version of Obok and calibre?

I have Kobo Desktop installed on the same computer as Calibre. I have Calibre 7.0 and Obok DeDRM v10.0.9. Kobo Desktop is 4.37.xxxxxx. I tried to run Calibre in development mode but it didn't report anything when I clicked on the Obok DeDRM button and just showed the error message.

I don't know. All I can say is that it is still working for me with calibre 7.1, Obok 10.0.9, and Kobo Desktop 4.37.19051 on Windows 10.

Hi, I'm having some inconsistent results.
Windows 11, Kobo Desktop 4.37.19051, Calibre 7.10.0, DeDRM Tools 10.0.9
I am able to succesfully convert some .kepub files, but I'm getting a lot of .epub files which have the main text replaced with boxes and jumbled characters. The contents menus are fine though.
Using kobodl in the mean time.

Try closing Kobo Desktop before using Obok. If you know the book should have DRM, don't try to import it when it has a open green lock next to it. Close and reopen Obok (or calibre itself) and then see if the book has a red closed lock before importing to calibre.

I was finally able to convert mine a few days ago by following this Reddit thread to a T:

I found that my kindle desktop app was automatically updating itself, so I uninstalled everything and reinstalled directly from the links on the Reddit thread, making sure to turn the “automatic updates” setting off as soon as I downloaded the Kindle desktop app.

Thank you @haynogrey!! Using the older versions of both kindle for pc (2.3.5 - 70840) and calibre (7.13) with the current version of dedrm (v10.0.9), finally worked! I was previously using the most recent version of calibre (7.24) with the kindle for pc (2.4 - 70946) which was not working. I'm really glad it worked at that point because I was so confused about the what the Alpha version of dedrm was.

If I try to set the kobo directory I get

Obok is the plugin to do kobo books. The other plugin doesn't seem to know anything about managing kobo. If I remove obok then I can't do anything with the kobo books in Library/Application\ Support/Kobo/Kobo\ Desktop\ Edition

Help please :) I am a total noob at this. I have an extensive to-be-read pile of physical books so using an ereader app on my phone to move through them. I have used the libby app to download a digital copy of a book and it gave me an ACSM file.

I am trying to convert the ACSM file to EPUB using Calibre (7.26). I have installed the plugin DeDRM 10.0.9 but every time I click convert I get an error

Am I doing something wrong? ...... I probably am but what do I need to do to make it work?

An ACSM file isn't a book. Open it with Adobe Digital Editions authorized with an Adobe ID to download the epub. Then import the epub to calibre.

Running Windows 10 on an hp laptop and running into the issue 'Does not contain a top-level init.py file' , which i see an init.py file in the zip file, so, is that some permission i need to turn off from being blocked somewhere in settings or? Happy for any advice on this

You're loading the wrong file. Unzip DeDRM_tools_10.0.9.zip and load just DeDRM_plugin.zip into calibre.

Looks like you added the wrong file to calibre. Neither KFX Input or DeDRM is even called on for whatever this file is. The main book file for Kindle for PC should be ASIN_EBOK.azw.
