Custom exception formatter in Lighthouse PHP

I’ve created my own error formatter and I’m trying to hook it up in the configuration, but it’s not being called at all. Here’s what I did:
In the config/lighthouse.php file I added:

'error_formatter' => [\App\GraphQL\Formatters\ErrorFormatter::class, 'format'],

My formatter looks something like this:

namespace App\GraphQL\Formatters;

use GraphQL\Error\Error;
use Illuminate\Validation\ValidationException;
use Nuwave\Lighthouse\Exceptions\ValidationException as LighthouseValidationException;

/**
 * Formatters.
 */
class ErrorFormatter 
{
    public static function format(Error $error): array
    {
        $formatted = [
            'message' => $error->getMessage(),
        ];
        
        dd($formatted);

        return $formatted;
    }
}

Could help me understand how exactly the error formatter mechanism works in Lighthouse? Maybe I’m doing something wrong in the configuration, or perhaps the formatter should implement some interface?
I would be very grateful for any hints or pointing me in the right direction where I should look for a solution.

There is no option error_formatter in the lighthouse.php configuration. Please read https://lighthouse-php.com/master/digging-deeper/error-handling.html#registering-error-handlers.
